There are two ways to address hard water in the home – water softening and water conditioning. According to the water experts at Green Water Technologies, these two terms are often used interchangeably but they are not the same thing.
Green Water Technologies describes water softening as the process of reducing hard minerals such as calcium and magnesium from the water that flows into a home. These minerals can cause a build-up inside pipes and water-using appliances. Water softening not only removes minerals but also adds sodium or potassium – softer minerals – to the water.
Hard, unconditioned water may also be treated through the process of water conditioning. Water conditioning is different from softening in that conditioned water has had the calcium removed and no other minerals added. Green Water Technologies explains that conditioned water is also good for a home’s plumbing system and appliances.
